Havaianas
Havaianas is a Brazilian company founded in 1962, when the design was inspired by the Japanese zori, a traditional sandal with a fabric strap and a rice-straw sole. The rubber flip-flop that resulted came with a textured footbed modelled on a grain of rice and quickly became the everyday shoe of Brazil, sold everywhere from beach kiosks to supermarkets. For years they came in any colour you liked, as long as it was white or blue, until a misordered batch turned up in green and the brand realised people wanted them bright. The rubber is hard-wearing, the strap rarely gives up, and the whole thing costs a fraction of what's on your feet the rest of the year. Summer's most reliable purchase, and one of its cheapest.Read more
