We Like Your Look: Brit Bones

With a name like Brit and style sharper than the tip of a Sheffield blade, how could we not ask Brit to join our hallowed list of ‘We Like Your Look’ interviewees? So smarten yourself, maybe even put on a tie on then pour yourself a seriously sophisticated cocktail and sit back for a cosy chat with the best dressed Brit in town.

OK Brit, so talk us through today’s outfit please…

I'm wearing vintage workwear trousers, G H Bass loafers, Polo Ralph tie and cricket vest, Todd Snyder tie, Cubitts glasses and Barbour jacket - a very much mixed bag of British and American brands.

When did you first become aware of style?

I have been interested in clothes for as long as I can remember - when I was young I was obsessed with history and so became really inspired by historical clothing. I also grew up with a twin brother and was pretty confused that I was told by society that he had to dress as a boy and I as a girl - so I started exploring his wardrobe and so my foray into menswear started young!

You're a shining example of female tailoring, who are your favourite tailors and why?

I love Matthew Gonzalez - he is a tailor on Savile Row and has made me my favourite pair of tailored trousers - it's notoriously difficult to tailor for women and he's done amazingly. A lot of my friends are tailors and I see and value all the work that goes into the craft. But in all honesty, I think you can dress well by buying second hand/vintage and getting things tailored to fit you.

There’s also more than a hint of a Wes Anderson vibe to your fits, is this intentional or purely accidental? Are you a fan of his films?

That was a total accident honestly, I think that the style is just similar because of the vintage/historic silhouettes. I really appreciate his films and what he's done for cinema. The first film of his that I ever saw was Moonrise Kingdom and it was like nothing that I'd ever seen before - actually maybe that's subconsciously where my love for Scout style came from!

If Wes were to make a film with you as the central character, what would it be called?

I think my boyfriend would call it:The Impossibly Organised Chaos of Brit

He thinks that it is absolutely hilarious how I will always dress so well and have such a busy and well organised work day but still manage to trip up, spill something on my clothes and be distracted by almost every building I walk past.

Who or what else inspires the way you dress?

It's not so much a person per se, as historical photographs, vintage inspired films and old paintings. I absolutely adore Tudor dress but also mens suiting through time and women wearing suits (Frida Kahlo for example historically, Julia Roberts and Diane Keaton more modernly).

As well as being an incredibly snappy dresser you’re also a photo/video-grapher, tell us about that side of your life…

I obviously love making content but I also was really conscious that I needed to ensure a long term career - I also adore lifestyle shooting and photographing. I really love my work - I enjoy that everyday is different. One day I'm editing all day and the next I'm out filming a youtube video - one day I'm shooting in London, the next I'm in Florence or Geneva. I feel so lucky to be able to do what I do. It's only a recent career for me - 4 years ago I was sitting in an office building databases and reporting. I'm truly living my dream.

Who would be your dream person to shoot?

Jeff Goldblum - hopefully playing piano and singing. He's really a real icon and such a character. He also dresses really well and loves menswear/tailoring (he even attends Pitti Uomo in Florence).

Where is the best dressed city in the world and why?

Tokyo is possibly the best dressed city overall - most people tend to dress well and those who dress exceptionally really care about brands - and investing in special pieces.

Talk us through your three favourite labels please.

Where do I start!

  • Ralph Lauren - I have so many pieces by them at this point
  • les vacances d'irina - a hungary based, Paris inspired brand
  • Barbour - Beyond the coats, I think the brand designs such great pieces

...and I'll add one more - Plumo studio! Such wonderful womenswear pieces.

What do you think defines British style?

I think that tailoring is at the core of British style - but beyond that I think it's tailored but not loud - good fabrics, use of wool, clean lines, structured shoulders... I do think we have the habit of being influenced by continental Europe though, I love Spanish and French styles and I think it compliments British style well.

Who is your number one style icon?

I think most of mine died about 100 years ago.
